Tour De Cure
Date: 10/16/18
Have you heard of Tour de Cure? It’s the American Diabetes Association’s signature fundraising event.
It raises critical funds from multiple groups across the country. Those funds fuel innovative research for three main goals:
- Treating, managing and preventing all types of diabetes
- Safeguarding policies and programs that protect people with diabetes
- Finding a cure
Tour de Cure also gives people the chance to take control of their health. Cycling is good for you. It:
- Makes your heart and bones strong.
- Relieves stress.
- Helps your body use insulin better.
- Improves blood flow.
- Lowers your risk for heart disease.
You might choose to ride 10 miles or 100 miles. Either way, training for the Tour de Cure is one way to get and stay active.
On event day, participants will celebrate their efforts to raise money and train both along the route and after they cross the finish line. More importantly, they celebrate the Red Rider community.
Red Riders are participants who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. They show the courage it takes to live with diabetes every minute of every day. They sport vibrant Red Rider jerseys. They also receive special recognition before and after the ride. Many say it’s an experience they can’t describe.
Brian Swanson describes it this way: “There are many things that set the Tour de Cure apart from other rides: Singularity of purpose, spirit of community, close personal relationships, and unconditional support for each other”
