Food Help When You Need It: Understanding SNAP
Are you or someone you know having a hard time buying groceries? Are healthy foods too expensive right now? You’re not alone—and there is help! SNAP can help you buy healthy food and make your money go further.
What is SNAP?
SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It used to be called food stamps. SNAP helps people and families pay for food so they can stay healthy.
How does SNAP work?
SNAP works a lot like cash. You can use it at grocery stores, supermarkets, and farmers markets. You will get a Hoosier Works card that looks like a debit card. Each month, money is added to your card through something called EBT. You can then use the card to buy food.
What can I buy with SNAP?
SNAP helps you buy healthy food, like:
- Breads and cereals
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meats
- Fish and poultry
- Dairy products
- Seeds and plants to grow your own food
There are some things SNAP does not pay for, such as:
- Candy like chocolate and gummies
- Beer or wine
- Sugary drinks like soda and energy drinks
You also cannot use SNAP to buy non-food items. This includes pet food, cigarettes, soap, diapers, baby wipes, or toothpaste.
Am I eligible for SNAP?
To get SNAP, you must meet certain income rules. You can check the income limits on the FSSA website. If you qualify, you can apply online through the FSSA benefits portal, or visit your local Division of Family Resources (DFR) office.
After you apply, the DFR will let you know if you are approved.
How long do SNAP benefits last?
If you are approved, you will get a notice that tells you how long your benefits will last. This time is called your certification period. Before it ends, you will get another notice to let you know it’s time to renew. Your local DFR office will help you with the next steps.
SNAP can make a big difference for families who need food help. It can help you put healthy meals on the table and worry less about grocery costs. If money is tight, SNAP may be a great option for you or someone you know. Everyone deserves healthy food, and SNAP is here to help.
