National Foster Care Month

May is National Foster Care Month. There are more than 440,000 kids in foster care across the country. More than 30,000 children are in foster care right here in Indiana. This month, we take the time to learn more about the foster care system.
Children adopted through the Department of Child Services (DCS) has risen steadily since 2014. In 2017, there were 1,824 adoptions through DCS.
Of children in foster care waiting for adoption:
- 58.7% have been waiting 0-1 years
- 15.6% have been waiting 1-2 years
- 8.5% have been waiting 2-3 years
- 4.2% have been waiting 3-4 years
- 12.9% have been waiting 4 years or longer
How can I adopt a child in foster care?
The Indiana Adoption Program was put into place to find forever homes for Indiana’s children and older youth in foster care.
Most of the children seeking families through this program are between the ages of 8-16.
