Looking for a Doctor? MHS Can Help

The right doctor is someone you can trust to help keep you healthy. As an MHS member, you get to choose the doctor you want. He or she will help manage your healthcare and assist you in getting the services your family needs. Doctors who work with MHS can deliver high-quality care at little or no cost to you. Let us help find the right one for you.

What is a Participating Provider?

This is any doctor or healthcare facility that works with MHS. We trust them to deliver the care you need.

You might hear the words Primary Medical Provider (PMP) from us. You should visit your PMP for:

  • Sick visits
  • Regular checkups
  • Immunizations (shots)
  • Prescriptions
  • Referrals to hospitals
  • Pregnancy care

Choosing one of our providers makes you a member of our medical home or network

You deserve a successful medical home, where:

  • You and your doctor can build a trusting relationship.
  • You have a place you can always go to for sick visits and checkups.
  • You feel that your doctor and his or her staff care for you and are responsible for your healthcare.

It’s important you choose the doctor you want within 30 days of becoming an MHS member. If you don’t, MHS will choose a doctor for you.

How to Find Them

Whether you are choosing your doctor for the first time or changing your doctor, the process is easy. Go to the Find a Provider tool on our website. From there, you can search by:

  • Where you live: Your city or ZIP code.
  • The kind of doctor you need: For example, a doctor for kids or a heart doctor.
  • The help you need: Like a check-up or special test.

Remember: Make sure the doctor is able to see new patients.

What If I Already Have a Doctor?

With the Find a Provider tool, you can check if your doctor is with MHS. If not, we can help you choose another. You can change your doctor at any time. Call 1-877-647-4848 for help, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday–Friday.

What to Know About Out-of-Network Providers

If the doctor or facility you want to go to is not part of the MHS network, you may:

  • Need approval for care
  • Be covered differently
  • Have to pay costs yourself

You can find more information in your Member Handbook

When Should You Call Us?

MHS Member Services can help if you:

  • Cannot find a doctor near you
  • Are unsure the doctor is in our network
  • Want to see a nonparticipating provider
  • Need help choosing or changing your doctor

What if I Want to Change My Doctor?

You can change your doctor at any time. But if you are new to MHS, you must do so within 30 days of becoming a member.

  • Log in through the Secure Member Portal
  • Click “Change My Primary Provider”
  • Enter your location to find a doctor near you
  • Or call Member Services at 1-877-647-4848, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST, Monday–Friday.

What if my doctor stops working with MHS? Call Member Services to make sure they are truly out-of-network. (Contracts can change.) If you are in the middle of treatment, you may be able to keep seeing them until you find a new doctor.

Can MHS help me find a specialist?
Yes. With the Find a Provider tool, you can look for doctors who practice a certain kind of care.

What should I do before I make an appointment? Make sure your doctor is seeing new patients. Call Member Services to prepare for the appointment.

The right doctor can help you stay healthy. At MHS, we want you to get the care you need. That’s why we help you choose a doctor or clinic in our network.
