Mental health is just as important as your physical health. Mental health affects how we feel, think, and act. When your mind feels good, your body feels good too. If we’re stressed, anxious, or sad, it can make us feel tired, get sick more often, or have trouble sleeping.

Taking care of your mental health helps you stay happy and strong, and that helps our whole body stay healthy. By taking care of your mental health, you can feel your best every day.

  • Nearly one in 4 American adults live with a mental health condition.
  • Nearly one in 20 American adults live with serious mental health conditions that affect
    their everyday activities.
  • One in 7 children have a mental health condition.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It’s how
we deal with stress, worry, anger, and daily problems.

What is a mental health condition?

A mental health condition is an illness or disorder that affects your thoughts, feelings, behavior, or mood. A person struggling with behavioral health issues may face stress, depression, anxiety, or need help with alcohol or drug abuse. 

How do I know if I have a mental health condition?

Identifying signs of mental health issues begins with self-awareness. Signs and symptoms can be different for everyone. Example signs include:

  • You are worried about alcohol or drug
    abuse.
  • You are sad or feel you need help.
    It’s hard to concentrate.
  • You have low energy or problems sleeping.
  • You feel withdrawn from family or
    friends.

Sometimes, signs of a mental health condition can appear as a physical problem, such as stomach pain, headaches, or other aches and pains.

How can I get help?

Mental health conditions are real and common. Addressing mental health can improve your overall health. MHS supports whole health. That includes health of the body and of the mind.

Mental illness affects everyone differently. Always tell your doctor or healthcare provider about any behavior changes. If your symptoms are severe, it’s not likely your mental illness will go away on its own. But it’s treatable.
