Medicaid
After Medicare and employee-based plans, Medicaid is the largest source of health insurance for Americans. It provides health insurance to low-income families and people with disabilities.

Every state is different, and each one determines its own eligibility requirements, benefits, payment rates, and program standards. That’s why there are 56 different Medicaid programs (one for each state, territory and the District of Columbia). Medicaid eligibility is dependent on both income and asset requirements, as determined by the states.

CHIP
Created in 1997, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) helps states extend healthcare coverage to children whose families’ income level was too high to qualify for Medicaid assistance but who still could not afford to purchase private insurance.

State and federal government approved $24 billion over five years for states to provide new health coverage for millions of children — the largest children’s healthcare investment since the creation of Medicaid in 1965.

SSI
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal Medicaid program that helps provide healthcare services for the elderly, people who are blind and those who have disabilities. SSI enrollees typically have a chronic medical and/or behavioral illness and are economically disadvantaged.

A significant portion of Medicaid enrollees (26%) meet SSI requirements. Several states have developed special programs for people with disabilities, and others have enrolled them in their Medicaid program.
