Pregnancy and Healthy Indiana Plan
A pregnant Healthy Indiana Plan member can move to Hoosier Healthwise during her pregnancy…
Your health benefits through the Health Indiana Plan (HIP) do not provide coverage for pregnancy-related services. However, you are eligible for benefits through the Hoosier Healthwise program (HHW).
It is very important that you receive comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. In order to receive these benefits you must complete a request of change form and get a statement from your doctor which includes the following information:
- Confirmation of your pregnancy
- Expected date of delivery
- Number of anticipated births
Until you transfer to HHW, MHS will continue to pay for all HIP covered services but will not pay for any pregnancy-related services.
This information must be sent to the Division of Family Resources (DFR). You will not face any penalties due to leaving the HIP program early, and can return to HIP after your pregnancy as long as you complete a request for re-enrollment within 60 days of the end of your pregnancy. Once you have transferred to HHW your POWER Account will be closed, and you will be sent your portion, if any, of the balance.
After you are no longer pregnant…
Since you are no longer pregnant, you are eligible to re-enroll in HIP for a new 12-month coverage term with the same benefits you had before you changed to HHW. To qualify, you must make a request and complete all necessary forms no later than 60 days after the birth of your baby. You must also continue to meet HIP eligibility requirements.
MHS will help you transfer back to HIP by providing instruction and assistance with completing necessary forms. Please be advised that your baby is not eligible for coverage under the HIP program. We encourage you to look at other government sponsored programs for healthcare coverage for your baby.
Please call your local Division of Family Resources (DFR) office or apply online at the indiana medicaid website.
