We recently organized a Member Baby Shower in March. MHS partnered with Covering Kids and Families (CKF) of Lake County. It took place at Gary Community Health Center. And it was a big success!

More than 30 people attended the event. About half of those were expecting or new moms.

MHS Baby Showers give members the chance to get showered and feel special! We give lunch and tell attendees about MHS programs for pregnant women and babies.

MHS also gave attendees the chance to learn a lot of great information from a variety of presenters. We even gave away gift bags full of items for the babies!

Check out this cake that was enjoyed at the Baby Shower! For more information about an MHS Baby Shower, call (877) 647-4848 and ask to speak with the MHS MemberConnections representative for your area.

It’s time once again for Scavenge the Ave! It’s an annual cultural trail scavenger hunt. And it helps raise awareness about adult literacy. It takes place on Mass Ave in Indianapolis.

Scavenge the Ave is Wednesday, June 12. It is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. It starts and ends at the Athenaeum. The location is 410 E. Michigan St.

This year MHS is a sponsor, along with Indy Reads and the Mass Ave Merchant’s Association. You can help by getting involved in this six-block scavenger hunt. And it’s something fun and unique to do in downtown Indy.

Participants should register in groups of one to four “hunters.” Then, you’re off to take on the cultural district. You get the chance to figure out clues and hopefully get the top prize!

Come to the Athenaeum on June 12. Get a map of Mass Ave, the rules of the game, and your first clue. All groups will then comb the area for pieces of the puzzle.

Winning teams get discounts at local businesses. Plus, you get the chance to win even bigger prizes in a drawing.

Come out for a fun evening to help adult literacy!

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. MHS wants children and families to get outside and have fun together!

One-third of children and two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese. That’s according to Let’s Move. Let’s Move is a program started by First Lady Michelle Obama to help families get active.

Being overweight or obese can make you sick. But, physical fitness can help keep you from getting sick. It can also help keep you from having problems such as back pain.

To be fit means that you can move as much as you need to for your everyday activities, without getting tired or hurt. But, many of us have jobs that aren’t very active, and hobbies that are not active, either.

Try to make activity part of your daily routine! Get at least 30 minutes of high-energy activity every day. Playing sports with your family is a great way to get active.

Get more ideas on family fitness from letsmove.gov. Get out there and get moving!

How much do you know about vitamins? MHS offers some advice on what vitamins can do for your body!

Humans often don’t make enough vitamins in our bodies on our own. So, we must make vitamins a part of our daily diet.

Each vitamin has at least one job. For example, Vitamin K helps blood to clot. Some vitamins have many jobs. Vitamin A affects the eyes. It also impacts the respiratory and urinary systems. Finally, it affects digestion and immune function.

Vitamins have a recommended daily dose in order to work. If your body needs more vitamins, higher doses are used. This is only until it is corrected.

Some vitamins can be used to treat other issues. Vitamin B3 prevents pellagra. This causes diarrhea, dementia and dermatitis. It can also be used to treat high fat levels in the blood.

Folic acid is a B vitamin. It prevents anemia. It also prevents problems of the lower spine.

However, too much vitamin can be a bad thing. Too much Vitamin D can cause low muscle tone and loss of appetite. Too much Vitamin E can cause nausea and diarrhea.

So, make sure you follow the correct dose on the vitamin bottle. Learn more about vitamins at our free health library! Visit mhsindiana.com/health.

MHS reminds members about National Infant Immunization Week. It takes place April 20-27.

Babies need to be taken care of from diseases. This week highlights the importance of that protection. It celebrates programs that guard them with vaccines. These programs help make healthy communities.

The week brings together parents and healthcare providers. It serves as a call-to-action for them. The goal is to make sure babies are fully immunized. This includes 14 diseases which can be stopped with vaccines.

People throughout the country and across the globe are taking part. They are having events to make others more aware. These are planned with the state and local health departments.

This event teaches parents about vaccines. It shows them the dangers of certain diseases. Many of these diseases can affect babies and young children.

There is more effort to protect children against diseases. This will lead to a healthy start in life. It also encourages parents and healthcare providers to work together.
